2nd Friday Norman Art Walk: January 2016
Participating Nonprofit Organizations:
MAINSITE Contemporary Art: Home of the Norman Arts Council (122 E. Main) hosts the closing reception for Retracing, a group exhibition featuring the work of Fringe Artists Brandi Downham, Christie Hackler, Lisa Jean Allswede and Beatriz Mayorca. A variety of mediums will be on display, including sculptural, furniture, lighting, mixed media and more. Norman Arts Council Individual Artist Award Winner Katelynn Knick will have pieces for viewing in the Library Gallery.
The Firehouse Art Center (444 S. Flood) will host the 2016 Healing Studio Exhibition. This annual exhibition highlights the creative expressions of participants of the Firehouse Art Center’s weekly Healing Studio program. The FAC invites the Norman community to join us in celebrating these individuals during an opening reception during the 2nd Friday Art Walk.
The Depot Gallery (200 S. Jones) celebrates the work of artist Connie Seabourn with an opening reception on 2nd Friday. Seabourn says she has always been intrigued by flying and dreams of flying. Paintings following that theme will be on view in Haunting the Mind: Beings that Fly. She works in acrylic, watercolor, pastel and prints, but is perhaps best known for her delicate watercolors & bright, bold serigraphs.
The Norman Public Library (225 N. Webster) will continue with its 2nd Friday Adult Story Time, with readings from selections from our biographies collection. The event will be from 6:30-7:30 in the Campbell Gallery Room, which currently features student art from Norman’s Terra Verde Discovery School. That same evening they will be doing an adult coloring time from 6-7 p.m. in the Lowry Room. Participants will be provided coloring sheets, crayons and pencils but are also welcome to bring their own materials. A selected audiobook will be played during the coloring session.
Visit Norman (309 E. Main) presents a collaboration with Firehouse Art Center to showcase the work of Firehouse photography students in the Visit Norman offices.
The 2nd Friday Food Truck Park (Peters between Main and Gray) will feature a variety of Oklahoma food trucks, depending on weather conditions.
Galleries, Shops, Studios & More:
STASH (412 E. Main St.) displays a collection of photography by Greer Inez, who takes photos with the intention to inspire others. They also host a Zydeco Dance party, gumbo and beer tasting benefiting the Mardi Gras Parade and Friends of the Animals of Norman.
Studio Ink (220 E. Main) will have a NoShow. We will feature Reb NoFun and Mike NoTalent doing a full food series and a full flash series. Refreshments will be provided by The Cube. You can also enter to win a free original design $100 tattoo from Tanner Logan Pratt.
Bigfoot Creative (315 E. Main) will feature paintings by J. Nicole and an Iranian artist, Roya Dortolouee. Dortolouee is also a visual artist producing paintings and drawings much from her own experience from both back home where she studied for her BFA at the University of Tehran and here in the states.
North Wind Studio (422 E. Main St.) features handcrafted wood and metal sculptures and home furnishings. Stop by for live chainsaw carving with artist Ethan Elgersma from 6:30 – 9 p.m.
Sandalwood & Sage (322 E. Main) will host McMichael Music & a Songwriter’s Showcase for January’s 2nd Friday Norman Art Walk.
The Loop (225 E. Gray St.) opens its doors to the creativity of homeschooling families! Let the otherworldly images of local photographer Richard Jazzar transport you to another realm. His wide travels make for a varied body of interesting vistas, star trails and iconic architecture. They’ll also hosting a speed oiling circuit.
D.M. Wealth Management (201 E. Main) will host artist Rebecca Wilson, displaying works predominately in oil and watercolor. Her favorite subjects include family pets and other unique animals, as well as scenes from her travels throughout the year with her husband in their antique Airstream. The musical guest for the evening is Frank Lawrence.
2nd Friday Concerts & Performances:
Norman Arts Council and Norman Music Festival team up each month to present the 2nd Friday Concert Series. This edition features chamber pop five-piece Wildings along with synth pop purveyours Beach Language and singer-songwriter Jose Hernandez. The free show takes place at Opolis (113 N. Crawford). Doors open at 8 p.m. with the show starting up at 9 p.m. The show is 21+ only.
Norman Arts Council and Guestroom Records (125 E. Main) are collaborating to bring you Random Noise, an eclectic series bringing you even more free music during the art walk. This month features the psychedelic, blues-influenced folk rock of Costello and singer-songwriter Michael Loveland! It’ll start shortly after 7 p.m. and wrap up before 9.
Michelangelo’s Coffee & Wine Bar (207 E. Main) will host husband and wife duo Vanderzee. Through steady writing & performing. Brett and Laura have honed their own unique style, energy and blend.
